Birthday Card - Part 2

This is the process of how I designed my birthday card.

I used the below design as reference and also the text for the inside of the card.

Firstly I lay the background of my card with radial gradient and placed 3 rounded rectangle in the middle of the page and filled it with my desired colours..

I used paint brush tool and charcoal brush to paint the outline of the sqaures with matching colour.

Then I placed the reference cake picture in the purple square with adjusted opacity to be traced. I traced the cake with pen tool.

After tracing, I filled the colour and designs.. using gradient and ellipse tool to do some decorations on the cake. I used paintbrush tool to write the orange happy birthday on the cake. The strawberries are drawn with paintbrush tool. The four petals flowers on the pink colour cake is made with ellipse tool - effect - distort & transform - pucker & bloat - adjust to 54%.

Then I use pen tool to draw a candle on the cake and filled in the desired colour..

The "Happy Birthday" is done by Type Tool and I copy another set of the text and put some effect on it. effect - artistic - dry brush - pallete knife. Then, I drag the original text in front of the adjusted one to make it look shadowy.

On the left side of the cake, I drew some balloons with pen tool. and put different shades of colour on it to make it look glossy. I drew the string with paintbrush tool.

On the right side of the cake, I drew a big present. using 3D effect - extrude & bevel, I make the box. I adjust the desired extrude depth and perspective. The object - expand appearance so I can make the different sides into different colours. I put some ribbons over the box. I adjust the ribbon's opacity to 66.

The hearts and spirals in the back ground of the card is made with effect - artistic - dry brush - rough pastels.

The outside design of the card is finished.

Then, the other half of the card...the inside...

First of all, like the front page of the card, I put some light pink radial gradient on the page and I used type tool to type the greetings in the middle of the page. The font size and type is changed to my desire size and type. I insert the hearts and spirals (the same as the front page) to make it link to each other(front and inside page of the card).

Then it's finished.

The whole card....

Birthday Card - Part 1

Birthdays to me are important as it is the anniversary of my birth and it is celebrated each year to mark another year of a precious life. I was brought up in a culture where birthday cakes, presents and balloons are always in relation to birthdays.. In every birthday party I attended since I was young, the 3 things I mentioned above can never be missed out in which ever party I went to. Birthday cakes, presents and balloons are not only commonly used in birthday parties in Malaysia but also in other countries.

Below are some pictures I used as references for my birthday card design.

An Indian child's birthday party celebrated with the cake, presents and balloons.

A beautifully decorated birthday party venue with balloons.

And every children's favourite, Ronald McDonald... with all the 3 items I hav mentioned.

Some beautiful birthday cakes..

The presents...

I'm using the 3 items in my bday card design. =)

Progression of my calendar

The theme of my calendar is "Surprise". As I mentioned before, the presents one received on this occasion gives the feeling of curiosity of opening the wrapped boxes. Once the presents are opened, one will be surprised of what are being wrapped up inside. =)

I choose red and green as main colour of my calendar. It is because, Santa is always dressed in red and the green represents the Christmas tree and mistletoe ( a kind of leaf) which are always used for decoration during Christmas.

First of all, I use the Type Tool to type the dates and the month of the calendar. The I put a background colour of pink behind. I keep changing the shades until I get the pink I wanted. Then I highlighted the 25th December to red as it is Christmas day.

After that, I drew a small Christmas hat above the year "09" to show a little feeling of Christmas. It is also a deco for my calendar.

The Christmas presents are drawn with 3D function which I have learnt in tutorial class (3D stars). I put some ribbons over the boxes to make it look more like presents.

Selection of calendar

I am choosing the month of December to design. It has Christmas celabration which is one of my favourites. I think that it is a festival full of surprises where people get gifts or presents and being curious of what is being wrapped in there..

I choose the below design / layout for my calendar.

I'm planning to change the fairy to Santa. And the flowers and leaves to presents.

Stay tuned!

Explainations of my re-designed logo

1. I maintain the shape (round) of the logo so that it will not look very different and foreign after it is redesigned to suit the local culture in Malaysia.

2. The colour of coffee beans made me use dark brown as the outline colour of my logo and also the cup to symbolize coffee.

3. People usually drink coffee with a cup and saucer, so I drew a cup and saucer in the middle of the logo to show that people go to Starbucks to drink coffee.

4. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Bunga Raya) is the national flower of Malaysia. It has five petals and each one symbolizes the Rukunegara (the Five Principles of Nationhood), while the colour red represents courage.

Rukun Negara (Five Principles of Nationhood)

· Kepercayaan Kepada Tuhan (Belief in God)

· Kesetiaan kepada Raja dan Negara (Loyalty to King and Country)

· Keluhuran Perlembagaan (Supremacy of the Constitution)

· Kedaulatan Undang-undang (Rule of Law)

· Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan (Mutual Respect and Morality)
